The Boston Celtics announced Friday night that they’ve signed forward Ryan Kelly to an undisclosed deal. Kelly appeared in six games with the Atlanta Hawks during the preseason and was released on Wednesday.
Kelly played three years with the Los Angeles Lakers after they selected him with the 48th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Duke. His rookie season was the best of his career, having averaged 8.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, while starting 25 of the 59 games he played in. He started 32 games the following year, but none last season for a rebuilding Los Angeles squad. He saw his minutes dip down to just over 13 per game and averaged 4.2 points per game.
The 6’11” 230-pounder played his collegiate ball at Duke after being named a McDonald’s All-American while in high school in Raleigh, North Carolina. He went on to win a National Championship in 2010 with the Blue Devils, steadily increasing his offensive numbers each year on campus, ending his senior season with 12.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Last season, Kelly dominated in the defense-averse D-League for the Los Angeles D-Fenders, where he averaged 27 points per game.
His role on the Boston roster is not immediately clear, as the team is still looking to make more before their season tips off Wednesday night at home against the Brooklyn Nets. The team is already deep in the frontcourt and backcourt, and it seems like a good bet Kelly winds up with the Celtics’ D-League affiliate in Maine.
