A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com reports that Boston Celtics stretch-4 Kelly Olynyk is faced with a difficult decision regarding an upcoming shoulder surgery that has been diagnosed as “inevitable.” As Blakely reports, the decision is a difficult one for Olynyk because he in interested in representing his home country, Canada, in international play this summer. Olynyk is quoted as saying:

“If I rest it, I would definitely partake in the Olympic (qualifying tournament). That would be the reason to not get surgery at this point. If you rest it, it’ll get better but never solve the problem. That’s what we’re looking at.”

Canada would need to be victorious in this summer’s qualifying tournament in order to secure a spot at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Canadian team is currently scheduled to have their qualifying tournament start on July 5 in Manila, Philippines. There will only be one Olympic entry from the tournament’s six competitors: France, New Zealand, the Philippines, Senegal, and Turkey are all playing in addition to Canada. Olynyk’s team faces an extreme uphill battle as the 26th-ranked FIBA team, which is not only below New Zealand (21st overall): both Turkey (8th) and France (5th) are in the top 10 in the world.
