With the outcome not even remotely close, the Boston Celtics lost more than merely a game to Atlanta Hawks. It lost Isaiah Thomas, who is by far the team’s best offensive weapon.

On Tuesday night, the Celtics point guard had to leave the game early in the fourth quarter. The team announced that the player has been diagnosed with a mild left ankle sprain. He would not be available to return for Tuesday night’s game, either.

As it is with the Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry, the entire city of Boston will now be closely monitoring the ankle of its superstar bucket-maker. With losing game five of the first round of the NBA Playoffs, giving the Hawks a 3-2 series advantage, the Celtics can ill-afford to lose Thomas for a single game.

The team is already down Avery Bradley. Despite that, save for Tuesday night, the Celtics have been able to play valiantly against Atlanta. A lot of the credit for that has to be thrust onto the shoulders of Thomas. It is why it would be a figurative death blow to the team if he were to miss game six.

As for this game, Thomas wasn’t playing particularly well. He finished the game before leaving for injury with only 7 points on 3-12 shooting from the floor. He was also 0-4 from beyond the arc, had as many turnovers as assists (3), and finished with four personal fouls.

Additional tests will likely be ran at some point Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Either way, a city anxiously waits to hear the results.
