According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports’ The Vertical on Thursday, the Boston Celtics have opted to retain veteran power forward Amir Johnson. Per Wojnarowski’s report, the Celtics have picked up Johnson’s team option for the 2016-2017 season.
Now an 11-year NBA veteran, the 29-year-old will officially begin gearing up for his second campaign as a member of the Celtics.
A former second-round pick from the 2005 NBA Draft, Johnson was originally selected by the Detroit Pistons while going on to spent four seasons with the franchise. However, he managed to make his name as a member of the Toronto Raptors by spending six seasons north of the border.
Heading to Boston following his stints with the Pistons and Raptors, Johnson went on to appear in 79 regular season games in 2015-2016 while making 76 starts along the way. During that span, he averaged 7.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks over the course of 22.8 minutes per game.
In addition, he started all six of the Celtics’ playoff games a season ago while averaging 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks across 22.3 minutes per contest.
Although not producing high-profiled numbers last season, Johnson remains a durable presence along the baseline. It is worth noting that he has managed to appear in at least 75 regular season games in each season since back in 2012-2013.
Entering his second season as a member of the Celtics, Johnson will be sporting career averaged of 7.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
