On Sunday, the Boston Celtics renounced the franchise’s qualifying offer for forward Jared Sullinger. While the veteran big man then unexpectedly became an unrestricted free agent as a result of the Celtics’ decision, Sullinger was certainly not out of work for very long.
The 24-year-old tweeted the following on Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours after parting ways with the Celtics, indicating that he will be traveling north of the border to join the Toronto Raptors:
According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports’ The Vertical, Sullinger will be heading to Toronto on a somewhat surprising one-year deal. Because Sullinger has become an established presence that can both score and rebound when called upon, it initially appeared that he would potentially land a multi-year contract outside of Boston.
However, while Wojnarowski has apparently confirmed a one-year contract, Marc Stein of ESPN is reporting that the agreement between Sullinger and the Raptors is for around $6 million.
Now slated to enter his fifth NBA campaign after spending his entire four-year tenure as a member of the Celtics, Sullinger will make his way to Toronto sporting career averages of 11.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game across 258 total outings including 171 starts. Last season, he went on to make a career-high 81 appearances for the Celtics while starting in 73 of those games.
During the 2015-2016 regular season, he managed 23.6 minutes per game en route to averages of 10.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.6 blocks.
